Palm Springs Travel Diary – Joshua Tree

Palm Springs Travel Diary Joshua Tree

Welcome to the amazing desert of Joshua Tree and my Palm Springs Travel Diary.  My best friend and fellow adventure gal had been telling me for years about this amazing oasis in California, but I never really understood what she was saying until now –  it’s like a Dr. Seuss book come to life!

My husband and I woke up at the crack of dawn on day 3 of our trip to drive to Joshua Tree for a bit of exploration.  We left our hotel at 5am to arrive at about 6:30am.  The temperatures at Joshua Tree climb quickly once the sun is up, so you want to start early.  We spent the first half of our day rock climbing (don’t worry, you’ll get all those details in the next post), so we wanted it to be cool temps for as long as possible.

Palm Springs Travel Guide- Joshua Tree

After our climbing trip we did a bit more exploration.  The park is amazing and you could spend days exploring.  Anyone in the area should definitely make the trip to visit.  Now, I’ll be honest, I didn’t rock climb in this outfit.  But the scenery was so gorgeous, I couldn’t help but plan a outfit post while we were there.  I chose the coral sequined skirt because I knew it would pop in the gorgeous neutral setting of the grass, rocks and trees.  The off the shoulder top has become a favorite silhouette of mine.  This one from Zara is perfect for hot temps, and it’s ready for summer.

Check back next week for more Palm Springs travel to dos, outfits and a bit of rock climbing.

Palm Springs Travel Diary Part 2

post22

I open my eyes on day two in Palm Springs and already feel at ease.  One of the great things about this town is there are things to do, but you are encouraged to relax, take your time and enjoy just hanging out.  Today we decided to see a bit more of the town and do a bit of shopping.  I chose to pair a refined top with a bit less refined pair of denim shorts.  These shorts have been my go to for summer since I purchased them two years ago.

I threw on my new Aquazzura sandals and gorgeous new bag from Joanna Maxham.  This bag is my new favorite travel accessory.  It holds EVERYTHING and looks super chic while doing it.  The sides of the purse latch down for a slightly smaller bag.  Or if you’re like me and happen to stuff your purse when traveling, you can expand it to be something along the lines of a Mary Poppins bag.IMG_9706

What to do and where to go DAY 2:

We started the day with a bit of yoga.  The Parker offers group yoga classes on the weekends.  It wasn’t super strenuous but it was the perfect relaxation, zen yoga that vacation calls for.

One of the main attractions in Palm Springs are the spas.  After a bit of research I was pleased to find that The Parker had an outstanding spa called The Palm Springs Yacht Club.  I decided to try out a sugar body scrub, as summer is here and brighter, smoother skin never hurt anyone.  I loved my treatment and felt revitalized afterwords.  One of the most amazing parts of the spa though is the indoor pool and Moroccan Pavilion.  It looked like something out of a dream.  (See bottom right of next photo quartet).  Gorgeous chandeliers, luxurious furnishings, and all under this amazing tent, pool side.

Brunch plans this day are all about King’s Highway at The Ace Hotel.  The decor is an amazing throw back diner and the food was on point.

Head into town and do a driving tour of the beautiful mid-century modern architecture.  There’s so much to see and be inspired by.  The bold lines, bright front doors and concrete lattice structures are amazing.

Do a bit of vintage shopping.  My favorite spot that we found is The Fine Art of Design.  I thought the selection was fun and very Palm Springs.  Prices were a bit steep though, and that’s coming from a New Yorker.

Dinner/Drink plans were super easy and regal night 2.  Mister Parker at The Parker is a super sexy American Bistro filled with mood lighting and even better food.  Bring your appetite though – this is a serious meal.  We finished off the evening with dirty martinis at the bar.

I’ve never really been one of those New Yorkers that’s afraid of color.  Don’t get me wrong, a great all black ensemble can look chic as hell, but color and texture are a bit more my style.

With that in mind, my husband and I packed up and headed to Palm Springs to spend our Memorial Day weekend and one year anniversary.  Man, time flies!  We were looking for a cool spot to relax, do a few activities and chill by the pool, oh and did I mention relax?  Over the few posts I’m going to share with you my Palm Springs guide in four days.

Now, let’s start with the important things, what are you wearing to Palm Springs.  In May, the dessert is HOT.  It’s a dry heat, but none the less, you should be in airy, breezy clothes.  For day 1 I chose this gorgeous dress from Jude Connally.  I fell in love with the fun geometric print, bright blues and perfect Palm Springs vibe.  All of her dresses are perfect to travel with and don’t wrinkle, which for me is a huge plus as I can’t remember the last time I used an iron.

So the big question, where to stay?  We chose The Parker and I’ll be honest, that choice made the whole trip magical.  The hotel is a like a little oasis.  As you wonder the grounds you pass by all of these little hidden nooks and gardens.  There’s a French garden with petanque courses, there’s an English garden with a croquet set, and there’s a lemonade stand nestled by the pool (insert Beyonce joke here).  On top of all that, the interiors were designed by Jonathan Adler.

What to do and where to go DAY 1:

– Have lunch at Norma’s at The Parker.  A must have on the lunch menu are the fish tacos.  Add a Bloody Mary and you’re set.  No really, it was one of the best Bloody Mary’s I’ve ever had, you won’t be disappointed.

-Go for a bike ride around downtown.  It’s a great way to see the town.  Jump off your bike and swing into a few home decor stores and definitely pop in the Trina Turk store.

-Head for the pool! There are two pools at The Parker.  One is all ages, one is adults only.  Well, I’m sure you can guess which one we spent most of our time at.  The pool is where to be in the afternoon.  We met a bunch of super cool people and spent a few hours chilling poolside.  And better yet, the lemonade stand serves as the pool’s bar.  One spiked lemonade please!

-Dinner time!  One of our favorite food experiences in Palm Springs was Birba.  The ambiance is perfection, lots of outdoor seating, live music, and the food was outstanding.  I highly recommend the egg pizza, brussels sprout chop salad and lasagna bolognese with duck ragu.

Rebecca Taylor Floral – and 20% Off Accessories Gal Special

Rebecca Taylor Floral

I’m not one to go trend crazy usually.   But this season, one trend has totally caught my eye – off the shoulder tops.  They accentuate the neckline and collarbone, and just make you feel feminine.  My biggest issue with most of them though is that they’re always popping up and won’t stay in place below your shoulder line.  This perfectly designed top from Rebecca Taylor and matching high waisted skirt is the cure-all to that problem.  The top fits to the body and is cut to stay put below your shoulders all day.  I adore the cropped length that matches so well with this gorgeous high waisted skirt.  I equally love the skirt for its fit as well.  The waist slightly flares at the top edge so that it fits to your waistline and ribcage.  Throw on a great pair of shoes and a messy bun and you’re set to look fabulous all day long.

Last week I had the honor of hosting a shopping event at the Madison Avenue Rebecca Taylor store.  Readers, friends and fans had the opportunity to shop, sip champagne and take home their treasured finds with 20% off.  I’ve been a huge Rebecca Taylor fan for years and was so overjoyed to work with them.  The 980 Madison Avenue store has graciously offered 20% off to all Accessories Gal readers until June 6th.  So head into the store and find something to spruce up that summer wardrobe.  Just mention Accessories Gal for your discount.

Accessory Pick Of The Week

accessory pick of the week

Happy Friday friends!  There is so much to be excited for.  Below are a few of the things I’m loving right now, including this amazing REED Boxer Belted Large Satchel.

  1. REED Boxer Belted Large Satchel– So it rained today…a lot.  And what was I doing?  Heading into the Jimmy Choo sample sale, but not before waiting outside in the rain for 15 minutes.  Thank god for this little number!  The vegan leather was pristine after being covered in rain.  Reed Krakoff is back and has created an awesome line of affordable bags at Kohl’s.  This gorgeous bag is only $89!
  2. The BoCo workout- I had the pleasure (albeit tiring one) of doing a double workout with the amazing ladies at BoCo.  Our first class was the BoCo Power Sculpt, the second was the Blast 45.  In total this was a 1 hour and 45 minute workout.  Not only did I walk away feeling energized but it was the most fun I’ve EVER had working out.  This may be my new favorite sweat session.
  3. Rent The Runway Unlimited– From cocktail dresses to everyday handbags Rent The Runway UNLIMITED offers you everything you need for a flat rate of $139 a month.  One of my favorite new designers is even on RTR! Sarah Magid.
  4. Lululemon High Times Pant *Cool To Street – Absolutely obsessed with these pants right now!  I love the higher rise, mesh panels and side pockets.  Also, check out the Lululemon homepage today, you might recognize someone on the home screen 🙂  If you’re in NYC this weekend, stop by the Lululemon Soho Women’s Store on Sunday the 8th, I’ll be there from 12-5, selling pieces from the E.Kammeyer Accessories Collection.
  5. Cooked on Netflix– Acclaimed food writer Michael Pollan explores how cooking transforms food and shapes our world. I started watching the series thanks to my trainer.  What I fell in love with was the story of our history with food, our current culture around it and so much more.

Pop Color Dress

Walking around New York City you find the most amazing hidden gems.  A few of my favorite blogs talk about the lost streets, buildings and underground tunnels in NYC (see Forgotten-NY).  I’m always on the hunt for the interesting in my neighborhood.

After shooting one day in the Washington Mews behind my mother-in-law’s house, it got me to thinking, what other beautiful back streets are there in NYC.  I did a bit of research and found Patchin Place.  Once home to E.E. Cummings and John Reed, this quaint street is full of character.  My photographer Shane and I decided to check it out for ourselves this weekend.  I was excited to see when I arrived that the gas lamp at the end of the street is still there.  This beautiful classic street lamp is one of the last gas lamps left in NYC that is still serviced by the city.

On this gorgeous Saturday I was prepped and ready for a cocktail party that my husband and I were hosting that night.  I absolutely love hosting events and am always on the hunt for a great cocktail party dress.  This little number from Landero via  Rent The Runway was perfect for a fun evening at home with friends.  I love the asymmetrical cape back detail, white zipper and pop color palette.  I paired it with one of my favorite pairs of Charlotte Olympia heels, a simple leather choker and I was all set.

If you’re in the mood to host a little soiree at your place this week I will leave you with this little bit of advice.  After many years of hosting in my apartment I’ve come to find that it gets a bit tiresome to mix cocktails all evening.  Instead I purchased a bell jar from Fishs Eddy (similar here) and make a large batch cocktail for the evening.  I’ve been in the mood for gin lately and mixed up the below concoction that turned out perfectly.  Needless to say, there was not a drop left by the end of the evening.

Thyme After Tyme Cocktail (Multiplied by 60 for bell jar with a full handle of gin)

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ oz. gin
  • 1 oz. thyme-infused honey (boil honey, add sprigs of thyme, and let steep for 15 minutes) (I used about 15 oz honey)
  • ½ oz. lemon juice
  • 4 slices cucumber (for large batch I put the cucumber in my Vitamix)
  • 2 oz. ginger beer
  • cucumber slices
  • 2 sprigs fresh thyme

Preparation

Add cucumber, lemon juice, and thyme-infused honey into a shaker and muddle. Add gin and a generous amount of ice. Shake vigorously and then strain into an ice filled glass. Top with ginger beer. Garnish with cucumber slices and fresh thyme leaves.

Spring Romper

spring romper

As the weather warms and those legs that haven’t seen sunlight find themselves revealed, it’s time to take a refresh.  This cheeky little spring romper number from Marissa Webb immediately caught my eye.  I loved the lapel neckline, belted waist and short hemline.  Though I loved the short-short look, my poor legs hadn’t seen the sun for a bit.  I remedied that problem with a touch of Prtty Peaushun.  It added the perfect touch of color so that my legs wouldn’t blind you.

I added a few fun accessories to finish the look.  My favorite Olympia Le-Tan Clutch, these aaaaammmmmazing Tuleste feather earrings, and a great Valentino rockstud heel.  Happy spring friends!

The Perfect Shirtdress

The perfect shirtdress

Is there an item you’re always looking for to complete your wardrobe?  I’m always on the hunt for a great white button down, slim v-neck t-shirt and the perfect shirtdress.  That dress that makes you feel great and you can easily throw on in a hurry.  The right piece requires just a few accessories and you’re ready to head out the door.  Well, look no further, this gem from 10 Crosby Derek Lam fits the bill.  This piece exudes menswear vibes with its crisp collar and vertical stripes.  I’m in love with the casual cool sleeves wrapped around your waist detail as well.  Pair them with a great boot or sandal, a bold lip, and you’re ready to go.

I picked out this dress from Rent The Runway Unlimited for the perfect weekend cool vibe. Rent The Runway has an awesome selection of ready to wear separates, bags, and accessories from designers like Marissa Webb, Tibi, and Milly.  They are now offering a new service called UNLIMITED.  RTR gives you the ability to rent unlimited items (3 at a time) for a flat rate every month.  For those who don’t have unlimited budgets for new clothes and unlimited closet space, this is the cure for your summer wardrobe.

Brunch Style

rent-the-runway-23

Off in a land far, far away, ok, Brooklyn, I had the perfect Saturday brunch with one of my favorite people.  She’s one of my closest, most stylish friends: Liz Teich of TheBrooklynStylist.com.  I was introduced to something EVERYONE is currently obsessed with and the possible replacement to my coffee addiction, the matcha latte at Cafe Pedlar.  I’ve been drinking matcha for the last 6 years thanks to my green tea addicted husband, but never like this.  Liz introduced me to something far creamier, and delicious, with a decent helping of caffeine.

Liz and I happen to think alike and showed up to brunch in hilariously twinning outfits as you can see here.  Hey, great minds think alike. We both are loving the layered vest look right now and took it in 2 different directions. My brunch style is a layered look featuring this C/MEO Collective vest with an off the shoulder top.  I am completely obsessed with this vest right now.  The extreme high low hem paired well with an off the shoulder top (which we all seem to be in love with right now).  The extreme high low hem called for a pant that elongated the leg and brought your eye down the silhouette.  As icing on the cake I added this emoji inspired Any Hindmarch bag and an armful of decadent gold jewelry.

What brought us together on this fine Saturday morning, other than brunch, laughter, and good times was the amazing new offering from Rent The Runway.  I know, I’m not wearing a ball gown or shmancy cocktail dress.  Well Rent The Runway is so much more now.  They are offering ladies the ability to expand their everyday closet into the endless closet from Sex And The City.  Well, kinda.

Rent The Runway now has an awesome selection of ready to wear separates, bags, and accessories from designers like Marissa Webb, Tibi, and Milly.  And better yet, they are offering a new service called UNLIMITED.  This new service gives you the ability to rent unlimited items (3 at a time) for a flat rate every month.  For those who don’t have unlimited budgets for new clothes and unlimited closet space, this is the cure for your summer wardrobe shopping list.

So the question this season isn’t, what are you going to invest in?  It’s what new designers are you going to try, what silhouettes you’re going to rock on your way to the office and what great new bag you’re going to take out for brunch with your ladies.
